This week's newsletter has interesting articles, our current Peak Trail Blazer competition, an update to the Owai 5K series and the cancellation of the Stadium Challenge in Wellington.
Night Running
Andy Jones-Wilkins at iRunFar writes: "One aspect of running long-distance ultramarathons that has always fascinated me is running at night. It seems to be a somewhat overlooked skill in the context of racing but one which clearly has an impact on performance and success." Read his article for some tips and make sure to read the comments after the article too.
Running with asthma
The Guardian's running blog looks at running with asthma. Some of the parts of the article talk about traffic levels and pollution in the UK, but are still relevant to us "down under". I suffer from asthma myself, and it's brought on particularly when it's cold, during seasonal changes and when I run fast or on tough courses. Read the article here.
The rise of the "Facebook Athlete"
Dan at Ultra168 writes "Over the last six months or so, a trend we've noticed ... is the popping up of 'Athlete Pages' on Facebook.... But we're not talking about leading runners here, we're talking about regular 'Joe's' and 'Joette's' setting up a page so people can 'like' them and follow their progress." What follows is quite an interesting discussion about what constitues an athlete and why people might set these pages up. As always on these sorts of blogs, the comments are a good read too. Read it here.
10 remarks no runner wants to hear
The Shut Up and Run blog posts 10 remarks no runner wants to hear, including such gems as 'When some spectator at mile 15 of the marathon says, "You're almost there!"' Check out the other 9 here.
7 keys to a healthy running relationship
Runners World offers up some tips when running with your significant other, including keeping it honest in relation to pace; set ground rules; and agree to do your own thing. Check them out here.
The Marathon du Médoc: running the world's longest, booziest, race
The Guardian's Running Blog reviews the recent Marathon du Médoc, asking if a full marathon with 23 wine stops also offering specialities such as oysters, steak, and ice-cream a recipe for success - or disaster? Read about it here.
Peak Trail Blazer Competition
Go in the draw to win an entry to the Peak Trail Blazer on Sunday November 16th and an event t-shirt. Event options are the Tainui Trail (3.5km) or the Te Mata Peak Trail (12.8km).
The Peak Trail Blazer is home of the Hawke's Bay Orthodontics Queen of the Peak, Quarter Acre Wines King of the Peak and the Hall of Flames sub 60 minute club. Enter the competition by Sunday night; the winner will be drawn on Monday.
