This week's newsletter has interesting articles, our competition winner, one late addition to the running calendar and one date/event change.
Dozer the marathon dog
On May 15th, 2011, the Maryland Half Marathon had an unusual and unexpected competitor - a four-legged canine named Dozer. E:60 takes you to the course and reveals how Dozer reached the finish line and bested thousands of runners, including raising $44,500 for charity after the event. Watch the video here on YouTube.
Running in minimalist shoes
Runner's World was asked "I recently finished reading Born to Run. I don't think I want to go all the way to “toe shoes,” but I am intrigued by the idea that less shoe leads to stronger feet and better form. Do you have any tips to share? What kind of minimalist shoes should I try at my local running store?" Read the answer here.
Fun guide to talking like an ultra runner
Like every little group, industry or clique, ultra running has its own language and terminology. Phrases and words that we tend to use among our running mates, but wouldn't be seen dead saying when we're in the pub with our "normal" friends. Ultra168 picks ten of the best known words and phrases they've heard over the years. Check it out here. (Noting that of course you don't have to be an ultra runner to enjoy this article.)
Lactic Turkey Rogaine Series: Orakei Rogaine
The inaugural Orakei Rogaine by Lactic Turkey Events was on Sunday August 24th 2014, based at the Orakei Sea Scouts Hall at Orakei Basin. I'm a Cub Leader at Orakei Sea Scouts and was there on the day to help out with the kayaking activity and then subsequently ran it myself the following Thursday. Read my report/summary/thing here.
