This week's newsletter on May 6th 2014 covers a quick advertiser update, website modifications update, interesting articles and two date changes.
Quick advertiser update
Before we get into the interesting articles section, a quick update for advertisers. I sent an email out yesterday, which indicated there was some space available in July and from September; there is now nothing available until November 1st. You will need to get in quick and book space if you need to promote an event that's early in 2015.
Quick website update
And another quick diversion... I've been slowly working through some major changes to the website. Once complete in a month or two, the website will be "responsive", meaning it will work on mobile phones and other such devices; allow you to save which events you are going to or think you might want to go to; and some other cool stuff too. Watch this space!
Why you shouldn't plug in and tune out
This article at the The Age looks at reasons you shouldn't listen to music when running. For me personally, I quite like to listen to music when I run. I don't do it all the time and I'm well aware of how much more aware I need to be with my eyes for spotting danger (cars in driveways etc). I don't run with music when in the bush and I'd never run with music at an event.
5 tips for your fartlek workout
Once you've heard about it, it's every runner's favourite work out word! But what is a fartlek? A fartlek is a type of outdoor training that means "speed play" in Swedish. The purpose of this type of training is to increase a runner's speed and endurance. Find out more at Active.com along with 5 tips about how to go about it.
The psychology of suffering
Suffering is a part of every endurance sport. Learning to deal with the discomfort, doubt and pain of race day can help you attain your true potential. Mental skills coach Carrie Cheadle answers some common questions surrounding suffering and how athletes can manage it. Read the article here at Training Peaks.
Chocolate bliss balls recipe
A few weeks back I shared a similar recipe to this one, and as always with these sorts of recipes it's a great idea to try out a few to work out what you like the most. You can also experiment with the ingredients a bit to make them perfect for you. The main ingredients are almonds and dates. Check the recipe out here at Cerise's One More Bite of the Cherry blog.
The 5 minute beer mile has been broken
And for something completely different, Canadian runner James Nielsen is the first person the break the 5 minute beer mile, which is where you chug a beer each lap that is run. I can't event run that fast anyway, never mind downing 4 beers while doing it! Read about it here at Flo Track or just check out the video here at YouTube.
Recent updates
To find out what's been recently updated, check the website homepage regularly. I include in this newsletter a list of the more important updates (see below) such as date changes, cancellations, or late additions to the calendar. And don't forget to check the calendar page for a complete list of upcoming events.
Date changes
- The Huff n Puff Mt Stokes Challenge in Marlborough was postponed from May 4th to October 4th
- The Speight's West Coaster is now on November 29th, not the 22nd as I originally had it posted from TotalSport's schedule given to me last year. The upside for me is I can now run this myself :)
Have a great running week!
Regards,
Chris
