This Saturday August 23rd 2014 will see the final of the Hydr8 Zero Tough Guy and Gal Challenge take place at Lakes Ranch, Rotorua. Over 1600 guys and gals will take on either the 6km or 12km challenge over an obstacle course including a barb wire crawl, electric crawl, tunnels, hurdles, climbing walls, wobbly bridges and plenty of mud.
The series kicked off in late May, and has been to Hawke's Bay, Palmerston North, Auckland, Wellington and Rotorua over the past three months. Over 18,000 competitors have participated in these events, which is a growth of 4000 from 2013.
The final event will incorporate the inaugural New Zealand Tough Guy and Gal Championships. Competitors who placed in any of the 12km events across the country have been invited to compete in this event in order to determine who is the toughest of the tough. The New Zealand Championships will start at 10.20am on Saturday, prior to the main public event, with 49 confirmed starters.
The men's race is headed by Murupara farmer and local Lake City runner, Sjors Corporaal, who will be in his element running off-road and up hills. Corporaal won the event last weekend, dressed up as a Smurf, in 1:01:14. Taking him on head to head will be winner of the 9th August event, fireman and triathlete Josh Harrison out of Auckland. Harrison won his event by a 5 minute margin from 2nd place in 1:02:43. Other competitors to watch will be 15 year old Kaleb Wright (winner of the Hawke's Bay event), Jacson Kluts and Bobby Hunn (winners of the Auckland events) and Robbie McIvor (winner of the Wellington event.) Wanganui runner, Bill Armstrong will be looking to take out the 40+ category after winning his age group in both Hawke's Bay and Wellington as well as placing 2nd in Auckland.
8 out of 10 of the women's winners will be toeing the start line including top local Rotorua runner, Sue Crowley. Crowley won the event comfortably last Saturday, almost 8 minutes ahead of 2nd place. Three of the Auckland event winners, Caroline Cornish, Bridie Bradley and Miriam Gaensicke-Bartley, are headed down to Rotorua in a bid to take out the inaugural title. They will be joined by Hawke's Bay winner Michelle Rennie, both Wellington winners Catherine Dunn and Julie Johnson, and winner of the 9th August Rotorua event, Tasmyn Benny.
The first three male and female competitors in both the open and 40+ grades will be presented with a beautiful carved trophy each to take home for bragging rights.
On the day entries will be accepted for the public event, starting at 11am, at Lakes Ranch off State Highway 30, Rotorua. Spectators are encouraged to head out and support competitors in both the New Zealand Championships and Tough Guy and Gal Challenge. For more information, go to http://ift.tt/R6bFMT
